A Programmed Course in Friendship-Building and Social Skills By Joseph M. Strayhorn, Jr. 137 pages, paperback ISBN 1-931773-07-6 Author's Notes: This book is of the same format as Programmed Readings for Psychological Skills: a brief instructional paragraph or illustrative vignette, followed by a comprehension question. There are no illustrations. The reading level is tailored for early grade school children. Each of 26 chapters discusses a guideline for social skills: for example, use greeting and parting rituals, know what to talk about, know when to stop talking and listen, be a good listener, keep your temper, reinforce the other person, stick up for your own way when it's appropriate, don't be too bossy, don't criticize too much, cultivate a good sense of humor, and so forth. One additional chapter reviews all these principles. I attempt to illustrate every abstract principle with very concrete stories exemplifying their use. One of the best ways to use this book is for an adult and child to take turns reading the sections. The subject matter is very appropriate for adults, although most of the examples involve characters who are children. But when adults and children work together on this, both can benefit.
