The Letter Stories By Joseph Strayhorn, Jr.; Illustrated by Catherine Fischer 150 Pages, Paperback Author's Notes: These are illustrated stories in which the competent and kind main characters save people from crashing trains, keep them from sitting on tacks, prevent toddlers from getting into poison, warn dogs of approaching cars, and so forth. But the characters who do this are the letters of the alphabet, who in these stories have arms and legs and faces. If they want to speak to people, they can only say their phonetic sounds. Thus to say "jump" or "car" or "don't sit" or whatever, they have to collaborate with their comrades to first say each sound separately, then say them together. In so doing they teach the essential skills of early reading: phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, left-to-right progression, and so forth. These can be used by parents to help their children be ready to read. They can also be used by teachers of young children to teach reading in a fun way. The letters also model kind behavior and safety-consciousness. To order a copy of this book from Amazon.com, please click here.
