Attention Deficit Disorder is defined by problems with hyperactivity, impulsivity, and sustaining attention. Most people are familiar with pharmacological strategies for ADHD. Here I mention some nonpharmacological strategies. Sometimes these are best used in combination with medication. Most people with ADD (or ADHD) have problems with organization skills. Most people without ADD also have problems with organization skills! But ADD seems to render these particularly difficult. Accordingly, I would recommend that anyone with ADD make a thorough study of how to get organized. The following is an excerpt from Instructions on Psychological Skills, the chapter on Organization Skills. Can one increase skills of concentration, of sustaining attention to tasks, by working at those skills? We can improve most skills by working at them. The following chapter from Instructions on Psychological Skills discusses some ways to work at the skill of concentration. |
